DNS update failure  with Eventid 1196

Hi,

After looking into the event viewer ,i could see an error "DNS Failed to register for a server"with event id 1196 on Windows server 2012 r2.Certain task was carried out by Network team where in the IP address was changed and then again rolled back to old IP.After checking i found that DNS Registry is absolutely fine pointing the old IP.Please tell me why i am still getting the DNS failed to register, even though the IP was changed back to old one.

What are the possible resolutions that can be provided to eliminate this error ?

Regards

Rohan

Hi RoHan84,

As Ankit has mentioned above, event ID 1196 means a bad DNS packet. The request for comments (RFC) 2136 allows for dynamic update response to be formed by using two methods. This issue may occur because of using a third-party DNS server. The DNS on your computer that is running Windows server 2012 R2 uses method 1, while the third-party DNS server uses method 2.DNS client that uses method 1 treats the response from the third-party DNS server as a bad packet.

Are you using a third-party DNS server for DNS registration? In addition, we may use network monitor to catch packets both on DNS client and DNS server. We may compare the unsuccessful DNS update packets to successful DNS update packets. It helps to find out the specific cause.
